2nd quarter The Devil's Arithmetic Literary blog

The Devil's Arithmetic is a 164 page holocaust book by Jane Yolen. It's a wonderful book with historical fiction about young Hannah who travels back in time. She becomes a girl named Chaya, who is in the middle of the holocaust. She meets many true friends on her journey in the labor camp. Her "aunt and unlce," Gitl and Shmuel, are strong believers in God and use it to help them stay alive. In the end, Hannah becomes great friends with a worker girl, Rivka. They help each other through the hard times and keep their faith. The conflict in The Devil's Arithmetic is society vs, society.

Society vs. society is the main conflict. One group, the Nazis, didn't like another group, the Jews. The Nazis put Jews in camp where the Jews had to work. If Jews disobeyed a command, they could be severely punished, even shot. It was an unfair treatment that surely brought sadness to Jewish people. The Devil's Arithmetic is mainly about Jews being controlled by German Nazis. If they didn't follow the rules, they would be punished or killed. This book is based on true events that were unfair to Jews.
