All of the neighbors she had helped her and brought her slops for him. Chris fulfilled Sy's life, until his own life ended. Al Capone Does My Shirts is an adventurous 225 page book by Gennifer Choldenko. In this fantastic novel, a boy named Moose is forced to move onto an island known as, Alcatraz. Here, he must face a fear anyone would have living on an island filled with bad guys. He must face the fact that he's on Alcatraz, and there's nothing he can do about it. Moose just wants to take care of his not- so- typical sister. With stressed out parents, a frustrating sister, and convicts next door, nothing is normal with Moose Flanagan. The only way to know more about this fascinating book is to read it!

"The Great Fire sprawls over most of the city. It devours wood. It curls steal beams like hair." That's what happened in the historical fiction novel, The Earth Dragon Awakes, by Laurence Yep. This 171 page novel is about how the people of San Francisco reacted and what happened when the San Francisco earthquake occurred. The fictional part of this novel is what happened to Henry and his best friend Chin during the earthquake of 1906. This book would be for any child looking for a wonderful read and historical information about the San Francisco earthquake.

I would absolutely recommend this Laurence Yep novel to anyone of any age. It has very vivid writing to create eye- catching pictures in one's mind. Laurence Yep uses extremely detailed writing to keep the audience focused in his novel. The book changes perspectives between the two main characters, Henry and Chin, a lot. It does make it a bit confusing sometimes, but also helps the reader understand what people were thinking in the massive earthquake. I would recommend this fantastic novel to anybody.


The Earth Dragon Awakes is a wonderful book that swipes the reader away into the San Francisco earthquake. This would definitely be a novel I would re-read anytime! This book is crammed with historical information on the San Francisco earthquake. The novel also has a lot of true historical facts, like how there was an actual bull loose in San Francisco during the great earthquake. I would recommend this book simply because of it's interesting facts and vivid details that will suck anyone into 1906, when the San Francisco earthquake began.

3RD QUARTER Laurence Yep novel The Amah quickie blog

The Amah by Laurence Yep is a magnificent 181 page book. In this story Amy Chin faces some trouble when her mom gets a new job as an Amah. Her mother's late hours forces Amy to babysit her younger siblings, miss ballet practice, and almost lose her family. Amy and Little Miss Stephenie, the girl her mom takes care of, didn't meet for a while, and Amy had wanted to keep it that way. Amy has some rough experiences with her mother's new job, but also makes a great friend in this fabulous Laurence Yep novel, The Amah.
