This 171 page novel is about how the people of San Francisco reacted and what happened when the San Francisco earthquake occurred. The fictional part of this novel is what happened to Henry and his best friend Chin during the earthquake of 1906. This book would be for any child looking for a wonderful read and historical information about the San Francisco earthquake.

I would absolutely recommend this Laurence Yep novel to anyone of any age. It has very vivid writing to create eye- catching pictures in one's mind. Laurence Yep uses extremely detailed writing to keep the audience focused in his novel. The book changes perspectives between the two main characters, Henry and Chin, a lot. It does make it a bit confusing sometimes, but also helps the reader understand what people were thinking in the massive earthquake. I would recommend this fantastic novel to anybody.


The Earth Dragon Awakes is a wonderful book that swipes the reader away into the San Francisco earthquake. This would definitely be a novel I would re-read anytime! This book is crammed with historical information on the San Francisco earthquake. The novel also has a lot of true historical facts, like how there was an actual bull loose in San Francisco during the great earthquake. I would recommend this book simply because of it's interesting facts and vivid details that will suck anyone into 1906, when the San Francisco earthquake began.
